Hangzhou’s abundance of wells springs from its unique geography—rolling hills meet interlacing waterways, nurturing rich underground veins. Here, communities grew around water, weaving wells into the city’s very fabric. Around West Lake especially, wells stand densely woven like cloth, serving not only as vital water sources but as crucibles of distinct neighborhood culture and communal rhythm. Through sustained artistic engagement and deeply rooted local observation, Antone Liu responds to the profound sense of place and shared memory held by the ancient wells scattered throughout the area. Taking the well as a threshold—piercing both downward and upward—his project offers a gentle homage to the buried social histories beneath the surface and the structures of perception that unfold above it.
The artist will be in residence from August 1 to August 25. The exhibition will open on August 28.

刘苏(b.1999),现于法兰克福造型艺术学院(Hochschule für Bildende Künste–St?delschule)威廉·德·罗伊(Willem De Rooij)工作室深造,生活工作于法兰克福和无锡。
根植于跨文化叙事与设计制造史,刘苏的艺术实践审视建构认知的不稳定性,并将阀限同时作为方法及对象。凭借对材质的敏感,他的三维作品常用织物和布料为移位的经历赋形,在似是而非的交叉间营造叙事。刘苏以精密的工艺将寻常物件转化为手工锻造的表演性界面,探索不可见性与日常性的相遇时刻——当认知的裂隙被伪饰的完美表面撬动,既定感知范式便面临温柔的爆破。

Antone LIU (b.1999) is now attending Class Willem De Rooij at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste–St?delschule in Frankfurt. He currently lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Wuxi. Engaging deeply with the history of design and manufacturing, Liu’s practice examines the precarious nature of constructed understanding while embracing liminality as both method and subject. With a material sensitivity, Liu’s three dimensional work, often in textile and fabric, gives form to the experience of displacement and unfolds narratives in the intersectionality. Liu creates performative surfaces with handcrafted practice, and gentle detonations of perceptual norms occur when cracks in reality’s cosmetic surface are pried open by the crowbar of precision craftsmanship.
