种花

Transplanting

Transplanting is about moving carefully. Its about what

happens when we take root somewhere new without

abandoning where we come from. For me, its also personal

—my name means flower,’ and this project is a way of

planting, again, in both Beijing and Berlin.”

— Xiaochan Hua

Hua International is proud to announce a new phase in its program: Transplanting |种花, an ongoing initiative dedicated to cultivating and supporting the most vital voices emerging from Chinas contemporary art scene. Initiated by gallery founder Xiaochan Hua and co-promoted by artist Tao Hui, the project continues Hua Internationals experimental spirit and its distinctive operational approach between Beijing and Berlin.

Transplanting |种花 focuses on discovering and accompanying young artists in China, presenting their practices through dual solo exhibitions or small group shows, and creating opportunities for them to enter a broader international dialogue.

The title Transplanting carries layered meanings. In English, it suggests both the act of relocation—moving something living into new soil—and the transformation that occurs through adaptation. In Chinese, 种花 literally means to plant flowers,” and notably contains the word  (Hua), meaning flower,” the namesake of the gallerys founder. The project therefore connects the symbolic and the personal: it is an act of cultivation, care, and renewal, and a declaration of identity—rooted in China, yet continually crossing and redefining borders.

At its core, Transplanting proposes trans- as both a method and a condition—of movement, translation, and transformation. To transplant is to take something that belongs to one context and allow it to grow within another, without erasing its origins. It resonates with the experience of artists navigating multiple cultural, linguistic, and geographic worlds, as well as with Hua Internationals own dual existence between Beijing and Berlin.

The project also engages broader artistic discourses around gardening, botany, and ecology, which have reemerged in contemporary art as metaphors for care, belonging, and repair. Planting—once a gesture entangled with colonial expansion—has been reimagined as a queer, decolonial, and trans methodology: a way of building continuity through transformation. In this sense, Transplanting |种花 reflects both the physical and the metaphorical act of creating new bodies and identities that can take root across cultures.

This new initiative signals a deeper commitment to long-term collaboration and care for young Chinese artists whose work speaks to hybridity, belonging, and renewal. It also coincides with a renewed global interest in Chinese modernism—a rediscovery of early and mid-twentieth-century artists who forged their own modernist languages in dialogue with Europe and the United States but were later overshadowed by post-1980s narratives. Transplanting |种花 bridges this history with the present, connecting those forgotten crossings to the practices of a new generation that continues to rethink Chinese identity within global modernity.

Through its twin spaces in Beijings 798 Art District and Berlins Mercatorh?fe, Hua International will continue to plant carefully,” cultivating a slower and more reciprocal form of internationalism. The gallery reaffirms its role as a living bridge between cultures—one that grows through translation, tenderness, and transformation.

Borrowing its title from a line in There Should Be Flowers by trans poet Joshua Jennifer Espinoza, this exhibition reflects on lifes fragile insistence to continue, to find music even in silence. Espinozas poems speak of the body as both ruin and miracle—a site of pain, beauty, and survival—and her words echo through the practices of Shen Jinghao and Shi Yi, two artists who reimagine how bodies, histories, and desires might take shape again. Shen and Shi work in different mediums—video installation and painting—but their work converges around a fantasy-infused realism and a shared tenderness toward what is fleeting.
