Tommi Toija was born on June 6, 1974, in Lapua, Finland, and currently lives and works in Helsinki. Renowned for his masterful craftsmanship and material experimentation, Toija employs mediums such as bronze, ceramics, and glass, often applying artificial aging techniques to evoke a sense of time and fragility.
Guided by a unique creative philosophy that allows materials to lead and inspire, Toija deliberately shapes fragmented and incomplete human forms. Through this intentional intervention, he embraces a sense of "brokenness," giving form to chaos and imperfection. His iconic series of "pink little dudes"—figures unbound by age, gender, or race—explores the most fundamental states of human existence, while delving into the "inner child" and emotional contradictions residing in the subconscious.
Spanning painting, sculpture, and large-scale public installations, Toija's work possesses a surreal intensity that strikes at the core of human nature. It reveals a fluid sense of self, continuously shaped by diverse social influences. His art not only draws from a rich tradition of sculptural materials but also engages with contemporary discourses such as neomaterialism.
