In terms of appearance, the colors of these portraits break away from reality—their tones exude an indescribable splendor, even in the darker works. This splendor connects them to abstract paintings that seem entirely unrelated to portraiture: in the colors of the abstract works, the flower-like vivid expression is noticeably more direct. However, when flowers bloom in glory, they soon fade into dimness; a moment of prosperity implies decay in the next, so the state of splendor always seems to harbour a touch of melancholy. From a temporal perspective, the change between prosperity and decline is inevitable. What appear to be opposing states actually originate from the same source. "Flower-like" refers not only to the colors and states in the paintings but also serves as a metaphor for the indistinguishable abstract elements within them—those "abstract concrete forms" that resemble flowers, mist, mountains, or rocks. For the artist, they are the externalization of specific states and the temporary condensation of the flow of life (the so-called "concrete"); for the viewer, they are compositions of form and color, and suggestive imagery (the so-called "abstract"). Once again, just like the coexistence of splendor and melancholy, abstraction and concretion grow synchronously in these works. Thus, one is two, and two is one. Portraiture and abstraction are one; splendor and dimness merge into a single stream—like still water and flowing water, forming an endless rhythm of transformation.Excerpt from Yang Tiange’s essay

After his residency in Mount Wuyi in 2018, Peng Si’s artistic practice shifted from his well-known exploration of classical painting toward a more self-perception-based, liberated form of creation. Moving away from a focus on art historical discourse, he turned instead to nature. The hidden connections between natural forms and painting revealed themselves to the artist, and from then on, he began using nature as a kind of support—a “crutch”—relying on his own bodily and intuitive perception, channeling these sensations directly into his work.
Whether in portraits or depictions of flowers and plants, all became a vehicle for the artist’s “painting.” He boldly adopted vivid colors that he had previously avoided, projecting dazzling light, lush scenery, and intense emotion onto the faces of his subjects and imagined landscapes. In his latest personal projects, the works demonstrate a deeper understanding of painting, one that emerges from the expressive tradition of calligraphic brushwork.
