Switch in the Presence
C5CNM is pleased to introduce Switch in the Presence, a solo exhibition by the New York based artist Leeza Meksin, opening on Friday, February 6, 4-6pm.
Continuing her exploration of gender, body and architecture, Meksin presents paintings and textile pieces made with a wide range of traditional and unconventional materials. She uses oil and acrylic paint in addition to neoprene, linen, fur, dye and ceramics, to create new and surprising associations between painterly, bodily and architectural conventions.
Her painted neoprene pieces evoke garments, maps and envelopes, playfully questioning what a painting might be and how it relates to clothing, furniture, doors and windows. Responding to the unique architecture of C5CNM, Meksin creates narratives that comment on our embodied relationship to space and culture.

C5CNM is a project-based art space located in Beijing's 798 Art District, open to the public since April 2019. With an exhibition area of approximately 17 square meters, it‘s modest scale is well-suited for artists to conceive their exhibitions as one singular art work. The spatial design of C5CNM by artist Jin Ningning is a multifaceted and transformational artwork that mixes with the different occurrences that take place within, giving visual experience also an “acoustic” complexity. Unlike the conventional "white box" exhibition space, it is more of a "dirty box"—its nature hovering between a playground and a stage, embodying both a strong personal style and a genuine openness.
C5CNM is free and open to the public 24/7. Visitors may enter the space by acquiring the electronic lock combination any time of the day or night and spend time alone with the work.
