
白盒子艺术中心荣幸推出艺术家廖生祥2025年8月8日在白盒子艺术中心举办的个展同名画册《廖生祥:另类生长》。画册由策展人黄笃撰文,精心收录了艺术家廖生祥创作的重要雕塑作品,这是廖生祥第一次个展。廖生祥的艺术不是基于艺术史的逻辑,而是通过融合其它学科知识与地方物件和个人记忆的再现方式创作。他超越了已有的经验范式,以形而上的角度解读了生命的价值和意义,提升了观者的洞察力、想象力和判断力。
WhiteBox Art Center is pleased to present the exhibition catalogue Liao Shengxiang: Alternative Growth, published on the occasion of Liao Shengxiang’s solo exhibition held at WhiteBox Art Center on August 8, 2025. Featuring a curatorial essay by Huang Du, this catalogue meticulously documents a selection of the artist’s significant sculptural works, this is Liao Shengxiang's first solo exhibition. Liao Shengxiang’s practice does not follow the logic of art history; rather, it transcends established paradigms of experience by integrating knowledge from other disciplines with the representation of local objects and personal memories. Approaching from a metaphysical perspective, his work interprets the value and meaning of life, thereby enhancing the viewer’s insight, imagination, and discernment.

“另类生长:廖生祥个展”集中涵盖了四个层面:一是HOMO(身体);二是动物(鲨鱼);三是植物(树木);四是织物(蓑衣)。它们聚焦于探索欲望与约束、干预与抵抗、日常与异常、自然与人工之间的临界点,进而思考视觉之外的感知力。
The exhibition Liao Shengxiang: Alternative Growth converges four dimensions: HOMO (body), animal (shark), plant (tree) and textile (palm-bark rain cape). It explores the tipping points between desire and restraint, intervention and resistance, the mundane and the aberrant, nature and artifice, while challenging perception beyond the visual domain.



在这样的坐标中,廖生祥选择的路径不是基于艺术史逻辑,而是受启于人类学、地理学和民俗学,又结合后现代叙述和南方区域文化特征,重新建构了由身体、动物和植物组成的“奇异”场景。在这一跨学科场景中,看似作品之间彼此呈松散状态,但实际上它们相互连接,即以无形的身体为中心扩展至动物和植物,隐含着地理意向,营造出紧密相连的新叙事。
Within this framework, Liao’s approach diverges from art-historical logic. Inspired by anthropology, geography, and folklore, he integrates postmodern narratives with distinct southern Chinese cultural traits to reconstruct a “heterotopic” scene composed of body, animal, and plant. In this disciplinary context, seemingly disparate works interconnect: an invisible corporeal axis extends to fauna and flora, imbued with geographic implications that weave a cohesive new narrative.




廖生祥的超常叙事无疑提供了一种新的认知方式。他通过事物的二元对立或冲突拓展了观者的感知厚度和思维深度,与此同时日常经验和审美经验也浸透于自我价值观的认同感和归属感。在充满不确定性的现实中,廖生祥的艺术超越了现行流行范式,以形而上的角度解读了生命的价值和意义,提升了观者的洞察力、想象力和判断力。
Liao Shengxiang’s extraordinary narrative offers an alternative epistemology. Through binary oppositions or conflicts, he amplifies viewers’ perceptual depth and cognitive acuity. Simultaneously, quotidian and aesthetic experiences are also steeped in a sense of identity and belonging rooted in personal values. Amid pervasive uncertainty, Liao’s art transcends prevailing paradigms to interpret life’s value, enhancing observers’ insight, imagination, and critical judgment.
