What Can a Painting Do?

世界正以更快地速度，逼问着艺术究竟还有何用——面对战争撕裂的沉重现实，一张画的影响是否显得轻如鸿毛？面对AI毫不费力带来的正确，一张画有没有矫正错误的能力？

The world presses ever harder upon art, demanding to know its purpose. Before a reality torn by war, what does a painting weigh, but lighter than a goose feather? In an age of AI and its effortless perfection, what error can a brush still correct?

艺术在猛进的现实面前显得孱弱，并不因其做得不“好”，而是迷失在了求“好”之中，在某个时刻失去了与现实的连接，与意识形态一样成为了利益与权力的工具。艺术本是内在真实与外部真实结合之后的心灵产物，而艺术家的工作，是时刻敏感保持着对现实的觉知，用自己的频率留下一次次真实的痕迹，这痕迹是记录，是疗伤，也可能是超越。

Art appears fragile before the rush of reality, not by failing to be “good,” but by chasing “goodness” and severing its connection with the real, and becomes, like ideology, a mere instrument of interest and power. Art is essentially a production of the soul, born of the union of inner and outer truth. The artist’s task is to stay attuned to reality, repetitively registering traces of truth in a personal rhythm. These traces are records, therapy and may also be vehicles of transcendence.

在周阳明的本次《覆色》实验项目中，他尝试从原理型的色彩出发，发展出与西方“平等”观念对话的另一种路径：对差异的救赎，除了在可见的系统中被理性安置，还可以在不断地真实对话、生成中彼此转化。差异的存在不是为了制造对立，而是为了验证万物之中存在一致性，而这深层的一致性给当下带来慰藉。这就是一张画应去兑现的可能。

In Zhou Yangming’s current experimental project Overpainting, he starts from the principles of color to develop an alternative path for dialogue, one of equal redemption of difference, with the Western concept of “equality.” Instead of being rationally positioned within a visible system, difference can transform through continuous, genuine dialogue and generation. Its existence does not create opposition but verifies the coherence within myriad things. It is this profound coherence that brings solace in the present. This is the possibility a painting should strive to meet.

周阳（洋）明，1971 年1月出生于浙江台州临海，1992 年至2014年创作生活于中国北京，2015年至今创作生活于中国上海。他从来都是过着深居简出的生活，无论在北京的圆明园、东村或宋庄，还是在上海，他特立独行。周阳明始终认定艺术是始于情感的表达终于修为的深度，艺术是伴随人生走向精神无限性的过程。

Zhou Yangming Born in Linhai, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province in January 1971. From 1992 to 2014, he lived and worked in Beijing, China. Since 2015, he has lived and worked in Shanghai, China. He has always led a reclusive life, maintaining his independence whether in the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village, East Village, or Songzhuang in Beijing, or in Shanghai. Zhou Yangming consistently believes that art begins with emotional expression and culminates in the depth of spiritual cultivation; art is a process accompanying one's life journey towards spiritual infinity.
