We carry places within us is not a line from Etel Adnan, yet it is the line from the hallucinated Adnan that inspires this exhibition. We asked AI where the line is from, it answered with confidence: the opening of a poem called absence. displacement. The line is not in the poem at all. A second machine corrected the first and relocated the sentence to Michael Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost, a novel whose subject, a woman returning to a homeland, became strange to her. It could not be verified. When we went to check, we found the digital world was in collapse: Libgen dark, Anna's Archive blocked, the shadow of every shadow library shut down. Thrown back onto substance and vibrating matter, we found a cheap paperback and tracked down what we believe is every place the word "places" surfaces in the book. The line was not there. A sentence absent from an object, a book disposed of, it might as well be cast into resin. We searched until we were sure enough, which is not the same as sure. Google handed us a line from Albert Camus' essay Return to Tipasa "We all carry within us places of exile”. ChatGPT produced the author Gaston Bachelard, his masterpiece the Poetics of Space in which he says “the places in which we have experienced daydreaming reconstitute themselves in a new daydream”. Claude gave a different source each time, each a little altered, none of them the sentence we were chasing. The quote was a hallucination. It had never been said.

Shi Yi

1993年出生于广东潮州；2017年本科毕业于广州美术学院版画系，2021年硕士毕业于意大利威尼斯美术学院绘画系，现生活工作于北京。

施意的绘画寄居于宗教、民俗、以及大众传媒。他从中提取具有强烈情感张力的瞬间，通过身体语言的方式，将观众带入心理空间，鼓励观看者对个体情感和社会互动的理解。其画作中表现的身体细节（如肢体动作、面部表情等）既是情感的外化，亦带有深刻的文化和心理象征性，提示着动作和表情背后的社会文化结构和意识形态。

Born in Guangdong in 1993. Graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor's degree in 2017. Graduated from Accademia di belle arti di VENEZIA with a master's degree in 2021. Currently works and resides in Beijing.

Shi Yi’s paintings draw from the realms of religion, folklore, and mass media. He captures emotionally charged moments and, through bodily language, invites the audience into a psychological space that fosters a deeper understanding of individual emotions and social interactions. The bodily details depicted in his works—such as gestures and facial expressions—serve not only as externalizations of emotions but also as profound cultural and psychological symbols, hinting at the sociocultural structures and ideologies underpinning these actions and expressions.

Rafael Domenech is an interdisciplinary artist living in New York (b. Cuba, 1989). Domenech is at the forefront of a new generation of artists that is redefining the exhibition experience. He explores notions of architecture, urban design, and contemporary material productions to develop and produce different typologies of objects and spaces, such as experimental publications, pavilions, installations, and public programs. Domenech’s architectural interventions intersect publishing methodologies such as cutting, redacting, revising, and circulation as research tactics to amplify his interest in the exhibition model as an active machine for production rather than a repository space.

His work has been exhibited at SculptureCenter; Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City; The Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York; The Bass Museum, Miami Beach; Phillip and Patricia Frost Art Museum, Miami; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; Artium Museum, Vitoria, Spain; Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami; and Hua International Gallery, Berlin, and Beijing. He was the recipient of an award from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and the CintasFellowship. His work has been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, US; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, US; The Bass Museum, Miami Beach, US; the Soil Collection, Beijing, China; the Cloud Collection, Nanjing, China; Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, US. He holds an MFA from Columbia University.

Fanny Gicquel’s works move between installation, sculpture and performance and develop spaces that accommodate different elements which presuppose a scenario of activation. The sculptures act as extensions of the body and are activated through gestures that question the correlation of the body/object and the self and the other. In this way, the work explores the relationship between the animate and the inanimate, space and time during and after the actions. These works bring into play the spatial and corporeal permeability of the dualism between notions of individual/collective, private/public, Intimate/distant. The works require the performance and also exist outside it in a network of choreography and improvisation. Her work has recently been presented in solo exhibitions at Passerelle Centre d’art contemporain, Brest, France (2020); Loto, Brussels, Belgium (2020); Museum of Fine Arts, Rennes (2019); Maison Internationale de Rennes, Rennes (2018).

Gordon Hall

Born in 1983, currently lives and works in New York, USA.

As a sculptor, performance creator, and writer, Hall's work combines sculpture and performance to explore gender, objects, and their expression in art, challenging traditional boundaries of form and perception. Hall’s work feels both familiar and strange, recreating and "resisting" often overlooked objects to encourage the audience to consider the poetics of everyday things: how they affect us emotionally, socially, and physically. The performative potential of these works is emphasized, where even inanimate objects can possess a language of choreography, drawing attention to areas that might otherwise be ignored and inviting the audience to experience the resistance that space may offer.

Dorothea Reese-Heim

Hua International is a contemporary art gallery located in Berlin and Beijing whose exhibitions, publications, and public programming supports cross-disciplinary and performative artistic practices. The gallery focuses on developing long-term relationships with its represented artists and leverages its geographic bilocation as a means to critically expand how their work can be presented and received in radically diverse cultural contexts.

After two years curating the experimental art and performance project XC.Hua, Xioachan Hua founded Hua International in August 2020 and inaugurated the new gallery with spaces in Berlin’s historic Mercator H?fe and Beijing’s acclaimed 798 Arts District.
