艺术家最具代表性的《隙－积?研》系列，围绕色块之间相互碰撞却未完全契合的“隙”展开。对于权纯益而言，“隙”并非单纯的形式语言，而是存在于“过去”与“未来”之间的入口——一种通往永恒的精神空间。正如艺术家所言：“‘隙’是通往永恒的入口，存在于过去与未来之间。”画面中彼此摩擦的色块，象征时间的张力与流动，而艺术家以石墨填补其间，在反复研磨与抛光之后，使其随着光线变化泛起温润而含蓄的光泽，仿佛“时间的沉淀”在画面中缓慢显现。

石墨的使用，是权纯益艺术语言最重要的特征之一。出生于首尔、故乡位于以煤矿闻名的闻庆，艺术家选择经过亿万年高温高压形成的天然石墨作为创作媒材。黑色的矿物在光的折射下熠熠生辉，其存在本身即是一种关于时间的隐喻。艺术家不断打磨石墨的过程，也早已超越“创作”本身，而成为一种“修行”的体现。如同评论中所提到的：“不是人磨墨，而是墨磨人（非人磨墨，墨磨人）。”在缓慢、安静而重复的动作中，艺术家不断修炼内心，并重新理解“现在”的意义。

2012年以后发展的《无我》系列，则成为艺术家走向完整抽象的重要阶段。权纯益舍弃具象形态，将石墨研磨成圆点，反复嵌入画面，形成接近浮雕般厚重而细腻的肌理。这些点阵以圆形、方形、三角形与十字形排列，分别象征“天、地、人、方向”。其缓慢、克制而重复的创作过程，使作品具有近似冥想般的精神性，并呈现一种安静却坚定、温暖而深沉的力量。

权纯益的作品让人联想到韩国单色画的冥想性，以及空间主义对于时间与空间关系的探索，但他最终建立的，是一种属于自身的独立语言——在“过去”与“未来”的缝隙之中，寻找“现在”，并将关于生命意义的思考转化为观看经验。本次春美术馆展览不仅是权纯益艺术实践的重要呈现，也将成为中国观众理解韩国当代抽象艺术精神的一次重要契机。

A solo exhibition by Korean artist Kwon Soonik will be presented at Chun Art Museum in Shanghai. This exhibition marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in China. Featuring approximately 40 works, the exhibition will present key bodies of Kwon Soonik’s practice, centering on major series such asInterstice – Pile up & Rub and Absence of Ego, offering a comprehensive view of the artist’s distinctive visual language and philosophical inquiry.

Kwon Soonik is a Korean abstract artist whose work continuously explores the meanings of time, existence, and the “present moment.” His practice transcends formal abstraction and instead unfolds as a process of contemplation and spiritual cultivation. Felix Kwokobserved, Kwon does not simply paint “time”; more precisely, he paints “the present.” Between attachment to the past and anxiety toward the future, the artist seeks to rediscover the value of “now,” offering viewers comfort, reflection, and quiet inner strength.

Among his most representative works, theInterstice – Pile up & Rub series revolves around subtle “interstices” created between color fields that touch yet never fully merge. For Kwon, these gaps are not merely compositional devices but symbolic spaces existing between the “past” and the “future” — entrances to eternity. As the artist explains, “‘Interstice’ is the entrance to eternity, existing between the past and the future.” The rubbing and tension between color fields embody temporal flow, while graphite fills the interstices, carefully polished to reveal a warm luminosity as light moves across the surface, becoming a visible sediment of time.

Graphite itself is central to Kwon Soonik’s artistic language. Born in Seoul and rooted in Mungyeong, a town historically known for coal mining, the artist employs natural graphite formed over millions of years under intense pressure and heat. Dark in color yet radiant under refracted light, graphite itself embodies the accumulation of time. The repetitive process of grinding and polishing transcends artistic technique and becomes a form of practice. Echoing the wisdom cited in the essay — “It is not the person who grinds the ink; the ink grinds the person” — Kwon transforms repetitive gestures into an act of inner cultivation, refining both mind and body through quiet discipline.

Since 2012, theAbsence of Ego series has marked another pivotal phase in Kwon’s artistic development. Abandoning figurative imagery, the artist repeatedly embeds polished graphite dots into the surface, producing richly textured compositions approaching relief sculpture. Arranged into circles, squares, triangles, and crosses symbolizing heaven, earth, humanity, and direction, these geometric formations evoke meditative rhythms and spiritual stillness. Through repetition and restraint, the works radiate what Felix Kwok described as a “warm yet resilient strength.”

Kwon Soonik’s work recalls the contemplative spirit of KoreanDansaekhwa and the spatial inquiries of Spatialism, yet ultimately establishes an independent visual language of its own — one that searches for the “present” within the interstice between past and future. This exhibition at Chun Art Museum offers an important opportunity for Chinese audiences to encounter a distinctive voice in contemporary Korean abstraction and to engage with a profound philosophical reflection on how one inhabits the present moment.
