He E

1937年生，祖籍上海金山，是新中国第一代女雕塑家的杰出代表，也是西北地区第一位女雕塑家。1952年进入西北艺术学院学习雕塑，后任教于兰州艺术学院，并在敦煌文物研究所工作十二年。敦煌传统雕塑的滋养与长期扎根西北的生活经验，共同塑造了她刚柔并济、温润而有力量的艺术语言。1986年落成于兰州黄河之滨的《黄河母亲》，以柔美的线条和温暖的母子意象突破传统城市雕塑的宏大范式，成为兰州的城市象征，也成为海内外中华儿女共享的文化记忆。七十余年来，何鄂持续创作城市公共雕塑、人物肖像及历史与公共主题作品。1994年，她创办甘肃何鄂雕塑院。除艺术创作外，她还策划大型公共艺术项目与国际雕塑展，主持编纂《中国当代女雕塑家》，并通过研究、出版与公共讲座推动中国女性雕塑及西北雕塑事业的发展。

Artist Biography

He E (b. 1937; ancestral home in Jinshan, Shanghai) is a distinguished artist and one of New China’s first-generation women sculptors. She is also the first woman sculptor in Northwest China. She began studying sculpture at the Northwest Academy of Art in 1952, later taught at the Lanzhou Institute of Arts, and spent twelve years at the Dunhuang Institute of Cultural Relics. Nourished by traditional Dunhuang sculpture and her decades-long life in Northwest China, she forged an artistic language marked by a distinctive balance of strength and grace.

Completed on the banks of the Yellow River in Lanzhou in 1986, her signature work, Yellow River Mother, broke with the monumental rigidity of conventional public sculpture. Through fluid lines and warm, evocative imagery embodying maternal love and the bond between mother and child, it has become an emblem of Lanzhou and a cultural memory shared by Chinese people both at home and abroad.

For more than seventy years, He E’s sculptural practice has encompassed urban public sculptures, portraits, and works on historical and public themes. In 1994, she founded the Gansu He E Sculpture Academy. Alongside her sculptural practice, she has organized major public art projects and international sculpture exhibitions, led the compilation of Contemporary Chinese Women Sculptors, and advanced women’s sculpture in China and the development of sculpture in Northwest China through research, publishing, and public lectures.

这是一位用艺术表达心声的歌者所发出的深情歌唱。

在“母亲之歌”“承先启后”“走向公众”“时代和声”的四个篇章里，完整的叙事脉络、清晰的空间逻辑，为观众搭建了一条通向何鄂先生内心世界的通道。

何鄂辗转江南塞北的人生阅历，淬炼出“喃喃自语”的婉约本心与“放声歌唱”的时代胸襟，形成了刚柔并济的独特艺术风貌。她的代表作《黄河母亲》突破传统公共雕塑的硬朗宏大范式，以柔美线条、温润意象诠释母爱与生命，开辟出抒情化、生活化的全新审美路径，拓展了中国城市公共雕塑的创作格局。

深耕创作之余，何鄂还以散文和诗歌见长；她以微观视角研究传统雕塑，为中国雕塑史研究提供全新范式；她还牵头编撰国内首部女性雕塑家大型图册，助力中国女性雕塑事业发展；她还组织本土雕塑学术活动，重塑了西北雕塑生态……

Foreword

This is a retrospective of seventy years in the artistic life of one of New China’s first-generation women sculptors.

This is the heartfelt expression of an artist who gives voice to her inner world through sculpture.

Through its four chapters, “Song of the Mother,” “Legacy and Innovation,” “Into the Public Realm,” and “Harmonies of the Times,” a coherent narrative arc and clear structural logic build a passage into He E’s inner world.

He E's life journey from the Jiangnan region to Northwest China forged within her both the lyrical inwardness of a voice "murmuring to itself," and the expansive spirit of one "singing aloud" for her times. Together they endowed her art with a distinctive balance of strength and grace. Her signature work, Yellow River Mother, broke with the monumental rigidity of conventional public sculpture. Through fluid lines and warm, evocative imagery, it gives form to maternal love and to life itself, opening a new aesthetic path that is both lyrical and grounded in everyday life, and broadening the creative horizons of urban public sculpture in China.

Alongside her sustained sculptural practice, He E has also excelled in prose and poetry. Her meticulous research on traditional sculpture has offered a new paradigm for the study of Chinese sculpture history. She led the compilation of the first major illustrated volume on Chinese women sculptors, advancing the field for women in the arts nationwide. She also organized locally rooted academic initiatives that revitalized the sculpture ecosystem in Northwest China.

What, then, does this artist create for? For her times, for her country and its people, and for every visitor who steps into the exhibition halls.
