Rao Weiyi, was born in 1993 in Hunan, China. He received his BFA from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2016 and his MFA from the same department in 2020.

Rao Weiyi is an emerging artist of a younger generation whose practice has long engaged with cyberculture and social ecology. He translates the distinctive textures of online imagery into an experimental painterly language, using fictional and hypertextual narratives to articulate states of anxiety, restraint, and emotional unease in contemporary life. His paintings often contain surreal scenarios, yet these scenes unfold in a matter-of-fact and deliberately undramatic manner. Like quiet monologues, they resist persuasion or overt narrative tension, instead drawing the viewer into their situations through a sense of empathy and immediacy.
